Therapeutic Approach of Compassionate Inquiry

Gabor Maté will also offer a practical taste of Compassionate Inquiry, which is a psychotherapeutic approach that he developed based on many years of experience with the mentally and physically ill.

  • Compassionate inquiry reveals what lies beneath the outward appearance we present to the world. Client and therapist uncover different levels of consciousness, mental climate, hidden assumptions, implicit memories, repressed emotions and bodily states.

  • Through compassionate questioning, the client can recognize and bring to light the inner negative beliefs, subconscious dynamics and repressed emotions that control their life and are at the root of their problems.

  • Compassionate inquiry is a somatically based approach. Healing does not come only through intellectual understanding.

  • The therapist compassionately holds a space of safety to survive and feel emotions and pain so that the client can be with them and integrate them.

"Not every story has a happy ending, but the discoveries of science, the teachings of the heart
and the revelations of the soul assure us that no human being is ever beyond redemption. The possibility of renewal exists as long as there is life. How to foster this possibility in others and in ourselves is the ultimate question."
- Gabor Maté
